Ownership of property. Real property has a title that can be thought of as a bill of ownership.
Title is important
If you are an heir in probate then you do not technically have the title to any of the decedent’s assets like a car title or title for a home. The title will not be officially transferred to your name until the final distribution has concluded. That is why you can’t sell real estate while it is in the probate process since it is technically owned by the estate until it passes to the beneficiaries.
