Person appointed by the court to take care of minor children or incompetent adults.
Sometimes called a conservator.
If a person is unable to manage their own affairs or finances, the probate court may appoint a guardian to act on their behalf. This can happen if the person in question is a minor or if they are otherwise incapacitated.
The court will appoint a guardian based on the child’s best interests if a valid will or a testament does not name one. If a family member is available, they usually go with that person. A guardian could be appointed by a third party, such as a family member or close friend.
